A person golfing 3 to 5 days a week all year round in the US still had only 61nmol/L (24ng/ml)

My note: Despite exposing himself to sun through golf for 3-5 days a week throughout the year, Gregg seems to have very low Vitamin D levels - only 24ng/ml. So, sun exposure alone is not sufficient for improving Vitamin D levels?

I'm interested in hearing about people's vitamin D supplementation.
I started supplementing D3 about a year ago at a rate of 5000IU per day in an effort to get my serum 25(OH)D level up to what might be considered a normal level for someone living naked at the equator. I started this based on things I'd read and seen on the Internet and didn't have any specific health condition that I was 'treating'.
I'm interested in hearing if people have tested their own serum levels of vitamin D, if they supplement and if so what amount (in IU), whereabouts they live in regard to sunshine (hot, sunny, tropical, lots of sun to cold wintery, almost no sun), and whether they have perceived any health benefits from getting their levels up.
I thought I'd try a poll. I haven't done one before so I may not be doing it the right way - we'll find out.
I supplement D3
I have not measured my serum 25(OH)D levels
I don't supplement D3
I live in a climate where I get lots of sun
I live in a climate where I get moderate sun

Gregg Sheehan I found my levels at 61nmol/L a year ago and have been supplementing at a rate of 5000IU daily, plus sunbathing during the summer when I can. I play golf 3 to 5 days a week all year round and expose my face in the winter and arms and legs in the summer. I don't know if it is coincidence but my lipids have all changed into acceptable ratios during this time. When I measured 25(OH)D a month or two ago the levels were 178 nmol/l

Terri Stott Shouldn't both 25(OH) and 1,25(OH) be measured at the same time. Storage and active.

Terri Stott I also read D supplementation can lower potassium. And also raise requirements for A and K2

Vitor Alessandro I measured in the past, and recently gave the same value, 75 nmol/l ( 30 ng/ml ), I started supplementing it 1 week ago ( 2000 IU, maybe I will increase to 5000 or 10,000 in the future ), along with K2 MK7 and magnesium. I intend to leave this at 175 - 200 nmol/l ( 70-80 ng/ml )

My levels have always been low, I live in a place where it is sunny, but I did not have the habit of sunbathing...

Laurie Padget I need to take 5000 iu as I tested super low without.
Gregg Sheehan Here is a chart for conversions: (The first one I put up was wrong I've created another one)

Vitor Alessandro Thanks! I'll edit my comment to nmol/l
Vitor Alessandro I'm a little confused, your chart does not seem to be right, from what I've seen in some converters ( Vitamin D3, 25-Cholecalciferol ), the value is different.

Karie Rauch What vitamin D supplements do you take for sals sensitivity?
Gregg Sheehan I don't know much about salicylate sensitivity, Karie, since I'm lucky enough not to experience it. I take a Healthy Origins product I found online at iHerb. It contains cold pressed olive oil, gelatin, glycerin and water. If you are sensitive to the olive oil then I don't know what you can do.
Kelly Delinger I supplement 6000 daily and just tested in the normal range. I am at high risk for melanoma, so I get my sun in small doses.
Gregg Sheehan The material that I've seen suggests that there is a slight positive correlation between basal cell carcinoma and sun exposure and a negative relationship between melanoma and sun exposure. I don't think that sun exposure to the stage of burning is a good idea, but in my case I can increase bit by bit (first 10 minutes then 20 etc) until I can stay all day in the sun without harm.

Amy Menke My vit D (OH25) was 49 ng/ml a year ago. Standard recommended level was 29-50 ng/ml. This is not the same unit of measurement you have listed in your poll above. I'm not sure what the conversion is. I'm not supplementing right now. And I NEVER sup...See More

Gregg Sheehan I've put a chart above in the comments for conversions.
Gregg Sheehan You would be about 120 nmol/l which is considered good for bone health but may still be deficient for organ health.

Sharon Finney My Vitamin D level was extremely low just a month ago. It was 18 with the normal range of 40-100 (where I tested).
I'm supplementing now but not sure how much ground I'm gaining. I live in the extreme south of the US (Alabama) and get PLENTY of sun. I'm curious what kind of symptoms you guys have from low Vitamin D?
Gregg Sheehan From what I can see, vitamin d deficiency will impact almost every health indicator. Besides eating the right mix of protein and fat, getting our levels of D up is of critical importance. Symptoms can therefore range across the board.
Gregg Sheehan Of course it is interdependent on fats in the diet and cholesterol levels. If a person is on statins then they may not have enough cholesterol for the UV rays to turn into vitamin D. The wrong fats (those from vegetable sources) may also negatively impact ability to create vitamin D.
Sharon Finney I believe Magnesium plays an important role in utilization of Vitamin D also.
Tony Muma And boron

Gregg Sheehan D is a fat soluble vitamin, lack of fat in the diet may impact the body's ability to transport it around the system.
Gregg Sheehan Our society has certainly gone down a sad road with the health recommendations from the 'authorities'. Fear of fats and cholesterol has led to a diet high in sugar and plant fats and low in animal fats. This in turn has led to various new illnesses because of deficiencies. Increasing melanoma and other skin cancers has led to a similar ill-conceived fear of sunlight and the subsequent compounding of the problem by people blocking the sun.
Tony Muma How many are supplementing with boron?
Esmée La Fleur The vitamin D's I have tried all give me migraines.
Karie Rauch Woof I was afraid of that
Tony Muma Boron can improve vitamin d levels

Sebastien Fortier I've start supplementing many years ago,few years before starting my high fat diet,i've start with 5000IU,i've test myself after about 2 years on that dosage and i was at 40 ng/mL,i've increase my intake to 10 000IU for a for about a years then i've re-increase to 15 000IU without re-testing.I've finally re-test myself about a years ago,i was at 91 ng/mL which is a bit higher than what i was aiming for so i've back down my intake to 10 000IU.

Karen M Kirk I supplement w 5000 D3 as well as Vit K2, AND ALSO lay out in the sun every single day unless it's raining... I nude sunbathe at noon, immediately after eating (protein + sun Jack Kruse)... I live in Georgia (the deep south in the U.S.)... I'm fair complected so I have slowly worked up to 40 mins. in the noonday sun... It's been life-changing!

Sharon Finney May I ask what changes you've seen in your Vitamin D level?
LikeReply19 hrs
Karen M Kirk I've never had it measured... haven't been to a doctor in over 30 years... I'm 58... never sick... haven't had as much as a cold in over a decade... I don't believe in doctors, esp. today's doctors... I believe if you go looking for sickness, he/she (doctor) will find it!

Anne Yvette I live in Denmark and we really don't get much sun in the course of a year. My skin is very light and I don't tolerate the sun well, so therefore I take vitamin D3 90 micrograms per day. I also think that if we lubricates in sun cream, we do not get the benefit of the sun's vitamin D either.

Anne Yvette I started to take D3 in 2009 and this cured my chronic depression wow, I was happy, so it showed that I was in lack in D3 ðŸ˜‰
