Is it common to become lactose intolerant as an adult?

One becomes lactose intolerant as a child when one’s genetic programming signals the body to stop producing the enzyme lactase, which metabolizes lactose.
What can happen as an adult is that one becomes allergic in some way to milk proteins. If you experience discomfort after drinking a lactose-free mil, you are allergic and not lactose intolerant. If this happens, you can try drinking goat or sheep milk, which contain slightly different proteins components.
