Diabetes and Metformin

Summary: Metformin seems to be required by few people even on zero-carb diet. However, few people gave up Metformin after going on zero-carb diet.

Anyone here using Metformin as part of their diet or enjoyed benefits from using it?

Esmée La Fleur Hanna Achepohl I think uses it.
Cheyanne Gore you shouldn't need a blood sugar lowering drug if you are not diabetic. Many side effects from this drug

Keith Wright That's not true. Many use it to control lipids, weight, and sugar.
Again. Not here for debate.
Who is using it here?

Hanna Achepohl Metformin is used for PCOS and is quite effective. I've had no negative side effects and taken it for 15 or 20 years. I stopped taking it once and was miserable.

Keith Wright Now THAT is what I was looking for. Thanks.
I've been on this woe for over a year. 500mg Metformin 1x day. bg 280 to 400. A week ago, 1000mg 2x/day and 5mg glipizade. All numbers are normal. BP 105/70,bg 95. Lost 12#. Did you have similar results?

Hanna Achepohl Keith Wright I was put on it for PCOS and also hemmoraged 3 times and ended up in the ER. I don't wish to repeat that so I take my metformin. It of course helps with my insulin resistance as well. My blood pressure is perfect now but that has to do with my 75# weight loss and ZC diet.

Angie Mauro Saunders I take it for diabetes. I hope my Doctor discontinues it sometime next year. That is a bigger goal for me than weight loss. Although, I know the weight will come off and it will be gratifying to my vanity.

Shane O'Dowd-Rutherford It is very commonly used in longevity routines...I believe the Life Extension Foundation is a proponents and has written several (free) articles on its use, benefits, interactions and side effects.

Danyelle Elliott-Sim Yes. Had to get extended release form to avoid gastrointestinal probs though

Keith Wright How did it help/change?

Danyelle Elliott-Sim Metformin reduced bg a little. Difficult to tolerate though. Terrible gastrointestinal effects. Diarrhoea after eating. Extended release stopped Diarrhoea. Took it cos it said it was good for insulin resistance and I had a lot of fat to lose.

You need to get calories from somewhere, should it be from carbohydrate or fat?

Jay Rivera Metformin did absolutely nothing but make me one miserable, irritable, pissed-off hombre....the gastrointestinal b.s. drove me crazy.
1000mg -2 x a day was useless in bringing BG numbers down, they steadily rose instead.
Dropped it as soon as I started
ZC & guess what?, BG went down, weight dropped and haven't missed that bit of misery since.
Sure, if it works for you in controlling whatever ails you, then all the power to ya...I just couldn't tolerate it.

Hanna Achepohl It can take up to 3 months for your body to get used to it and not cause gastrointestinal issues. But it sounds like you don't need it now anyway, which is awesome.

Jay Rivera For four years I sheepishly took that crap......That's what my doctor kept stating every time I'd call to bitch & moan about its effect on my gut, "give it time..", "your body needs to adjust to the meds".....
I even tried the extended release formula....which my doctor said she took herself.
4 years later, I dropped her services & the meds...blah, blah, blahhhhh......lol
