One teaspoon of oil has about 45 calories

1. One teaspoon of oil (any type of oil) has about 45 calories. One gram of oil has 9 calories. So, a tea spoon has about 5 grams of oil.

2. Seasame oil

In commercially manufactured sesame oil, molases is added to mask its natural bitterness.

In Cheeku (cold pressed sesame oil), palm sugar or jaggery is added, which heightens its flavor.

Oil from cheeku keeps for a year when stored in earthen ware.

3. Traditionally, different oils were used for different purposes.

Sesame oil - for gravies and curries
Coconut oil - for dressing
Groundnut oil - for frying

In Japan, China, Southeast asian countries, and middle east, sesame oil is used as a flavor enhancer (note: not as a key cooking ingredient like it is used in India).

4. Sesame oil is the winner according to a study done by dental hygiene professor. Sesame oil is better than coconut oil for oil pulling. It killed 5 times more bad bacteria than water pulling. Coconut oil pulling killed 2 times bacteria compared to oil pulling.

Once oil pulling was stopped, the bacteria reached the previous levels in all cases.
