a friendly reminder: please get a **thiamine (B1)** supplement now!
After two years up in here, I haven't seen any thiamine deficiency related posts.
I have no idea how people can go on fifth or tenth (750 or 375 ml) of hard liqueur a day for years and have no signs of any B1 deficiency at all, unless they eat a pound of steak every day or something. I just got my first signs over a month ago and they are terrifying and rather diverse at that. I'm having constant panic attacks about it, like right now.
Please do not google the symptoms if you are paranoid type like me, and just fucken get to the pharmacy and get a bottle of B1 for like $5 and (from what I understand) don't wash it down with an alcoholic beverage.
Disclaimer & PS: I'm not a doctor of any sort. There is a chance that you will be pissing it away anyway in the evening. However, after spending some time at an emergency and subsequently in a psych ward overnight (long story), they give you thiamine first thing and put an IV needle in your arm for B1 IV fluid in case you will need it, which I didn't.
Sorry about the wall, I just want to take care of my fuckers!

As a current nursing student whose taken a ton of nutrition classes and has a personal interest in how to keep my alcoholic body healthy, I agree with you.
Alcohol impairs the body's ability to absorb vitamin B1, and most alcoholics tend to be at least somewhat B1 deficient. A lot of cheap Vitamin B supplements just include B6 and B12, but it's still very easy to find one that also includes B1. Just check the labels.
Take your B1 supplements at least a few hours before drinking alcohol, otherwise you won't really absorb much of the vitamin.

Thanks for the paper! and your post sort of validates my claim. It seems to me that importance of B1 has to be placed on the sidebar. Though a fan of peer reviewed articles, I skimmed it in fear of discovering the word permanent, the thoughts of permanent neurological damage keeps me awake at night! And you, dear madame/sir, just poured a bucket of oil in this fire of paranoia!
EDIT: just this morning I freaked that my B complex bottle has only 35 mg of B1 per pill, while pure B1 supplement has 100 mg. I guess it's better to look for B1 supplement specifically.

Post about B vitamins, which -- by the way -- is linked in the sidebar. It's under "Health Info>Nutrition (Reference Guide.)"

thanks babe, I just had a very bad week, and a bad day at psych ward. Just wanted to point it out once more. I simply want to see B1 is a must kinda thing directly in the sidebar.

i take b-complex, a multi-vitamin, milk thistle, and cranberry vitamins everyday when i wake up. Its a must for a CA on the go
level 2
I do the same except for the cranberry -- what's that good for? Kidney cleanser? I guess that's why you're supposed to drink cranberry juice if you have a UTI?
level 4
for some reason people think cranberries clean your body out... why?

I'll get my god damned vitamin b the same damn way I always have. Vitamin Bacardi with a splash of coke.

I've opined on the necessity of thiamin here many times. Beriberi and other B1 deficiency troubles are totally avoidable. And a good B complex supplement will kill hangovers and energize you in the morning.
Order yourself a few bottles of this shit right here, take at least two pills a day (I take one in the morning and one around 4pm). Check that label fuckers, 6,667% RDA of B1 per pill. You're going to piss nuclear neon yellow your first piss after you take each pill, so be ready for that.

Girl! 100 mg of B1 per pill is glorius! Though, not a big fan of online drug shopping.

After years of drinking, I have severe neuropathy in my feet due to B vitamin deficiency. It's horrible, pains and burning and the inability to feel things with your feet. This is the best advice anyone can give you.
level 2
fuck, sorry to hear about your pain. I too have a burning/numbing sensation in a few extremities, and that's why I call for sidebar b1 thiamine entry not only in bold, but blinking as well, before any CA-quette stuff
Closure did an awesome entry on that (someone linked above), damn I miss the dude.

Mhh, so I couldn't help it and googled b1 deficiency. Now I'm pretty sure I've got Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome.

Thanks for posting this, it is a great reminder.
In addition to taking supplements eating well is important. When i stopped eating it was always a sign that I was in trouble. I would go for a week or more running on vodka and supplements (including extra b1) alone.
I ended up with neuropathy in my foot and leg and couldn't walk normally for 6 months. 1 month was in the hospital for detox and other alcohol related health issues.

There are two things I've learned as a CA that you need to keep on top of.
Potassium and Thiamine.
There is a condition that occurs if you intake glucose with low B1 levels. I'm not going to go into details here since I've already explained my troubles but you don't wan't to do that. That's all I can say. Make sure to have an adequate intake of B1. That's really all I can say, it gets bad.
level 2
An easy and cheap way to get potassium is to use Morton Lite Salt instead of regular salt in your food. A few dashes in your meals will give you just as much potassium as an expensive supplement.

FYI Benfothiamine is a fat soluble form of B1 that is more easily absorbed than other forms of thiamine (B1) that are water soluble. Good for neuropathic pain resulting from alcoholism too ( pins and needles tingling sensations).
This is why you need to take the best Thiamine (B1) supplements you can find. It may save your life.
