Back in the 17th through early 20th centuries in America, rabbits were widely hunted and eaten by humans, as were other small mammals such as squirrels. I think the reason that rabbit-eating has largely fallen out of fashion in this country is more cultural than anything else. Simply put, to most modern people they just look too darn cute to eat!

Rabbit meat is quite good for you in moderation. It's high in protein and low in fat. But it's the idea that it's low in fat that is the reason it can be bad for you.
If rabbit meat is the only meat you ever eat, you can experience something called protein toxicity. Also accurately called, ‘Rabbit Starvation’.
However, it's still a better choice than beef or pork in moderation. It's low in calories, low in fat, high in protein. It's better for building muscle and your immune system.
Rabbit meat is also high in vitamin B-12, selenium and phosphorus along with potassium and a whopping 4mg (appx) of iron per serving, which are all good for your inner body workings!
It's worth mentioning that rabbit is also a more Eco-friendly alternative to red meat. The government encouraged people to raise domestic rabbit for meat during WWII due to a wide spread red meat shortage. They breed .. well.. like rabbits! And mature in a very short time frame. They eat less and cause less environmental damage in the long term. The only huge problem is they're so darn cute!!!!
Hoppy eating!
